How Smashpoint ELO works

Your ELO is Smashpoint’s answer to “how good am I right now?” It’s a single number that moves after every match you complete, up when you win and down when you lose, by an amount that depends on who you played.

The basics

  • You start at 1500. Every new player does. The rating updates automatically after every recorded match with a result.
  • Who you play matters. Beating a higher-rated player earns more points than beating a lower-rated one, and a loss costs fewer points if your opponent outranked you. That’s what makes ratings fair across players who don’t share opponents.
  • Your first 30 matches move the rating faster, so it finds your true level quickly. After that, movement becomes more gradual as your rating stabilises.
  • Only completed matches with a winner count. Practice sessions and practice matches are not included, so a hit with a friend never costs you rating points. An unfinished match with no winner doesn’t count either.
  • A score is enough. A logged result moves the rating exactly like a live-tracked one, whoever recorded it.

Surface ratings

Alongside your overall rating you have separate ratings for Hard, Clay, and Grass courts. They update at the same time from the same matches, using the court’s surface, so you can see whether you’re a different player on clay.

Rating tiers

Tier Rating
Beginner below 1400
Developing 1400 to 1599
Intermediate 1600 to 1799
Advanced 1800 to 1999
Elite 2000 and above

The tier shows next to a player’s rating on their profile and in Rankings.

Where you see it

  • Your own rating, tier, and history under Insights in the app.
  • Each player’s rating on their profile and on the Rankings page (sort by ELO Rating), in your personal account and in any Organization you belong to.
  • Groups show win/loss and ELO standings for the players in the Group.
  • Tournaments in an Organization can auto-seed the draw by ELO.

Why tracked matches make it better

A logged score already gives you a working rating. When a match is tracked point by point, Smashpoint also knows how it was won: the pressure points, the momentum swings, the serve and return numbers. That’s what powers the Match Profile and Clutch Delta next to your rating, and it’s why a Smashpoint rating can be explained, not just stated.

Good to know

  • Singles and doubles results can be viewed separately: Rankings has a Singles/Doubles filter for wins and losses and for Leaders, and Compare shows singles and doubles records on separate rows.
  • Minimum sample for Leaders. Leaderboards that rank by a single stat (Rankings › Leaders in an Organization) only list a player once there’s enough behind the number: 5 matches for most stats, and for percentages such as 1st serve in, service games won, or break-point conversion, a minimum number of serves, service games, or break points. That way one hot week can’t outrank a season. Your ELO rating has no such minimum.
