For Parents & Trackers: Getting started
You’re a parent at the fence, or the person keeping score for a match that isn’t your own. You want more than “how’d it go?” when it’s over, and you’d like the people who couldn’t be there to follow along. You don’t need to organize a team or manage anyone; you track the match in front of you and Smashpoint does the rest.
You’ll need a Smashpoint account (free to create) and the app on your iPhone or Android phone. Every new personal account starts with a 7-day trial of all features, which covers everything in this guide. After that, following matches, stats, rankings, and head-to-heads stays free, while tracking a match courtside or entering a result needs Pro.
Steps
Step 1: Add your player and their opponent
Go to Players and add your player by name. Do the same for today’s opponent. Neither needs an account. If your player already has a Smashpoint account, connect with them instead, so every match you track lands in their record too.
Step 2: Track the match from the fence
Tap New Match, pick the two players, choose the format (best of three sets is the default; no-ad, match tiebreak, Fast4, and custom formats are all there), and select Live Tracking.
Then pick how much you want to track. Smashpoint has five tracking styles, and every one of them produces a complete result:
- Games: enter games and sets as they finish. The fastest way to a shareable result.
- Points: tap who won each point. Live score, momentum, and pressure points.
- Serve & Points: add first or second serve, aces, and double faults.
- Point Outcomes: tag how each point ended (winner, forced error, unforced error) and which wing.
- Full shot tracking: everything above plus serve and shot placement. The complete Match Profile.
If it’s your first time, start with Games or Points. You can go deeper next match.
Step 3: Let everyone follow it live
Switch the match to LIVE and it streams point by point as it happens. Anyone connected to your player sees it inside the app. For everyone else, share the match’s public web page: grandparents and teammates follow from the link, no account needed.
At home, Smashpoint on Apple TV puts the match on the big screen. Enter the code the TV shows into your phone once, and everything you can see in the app is on the TV, live and completed matches alike. Viewing is free.
Step 4: Read the story behind the score
When the match ends, open it. The Info tab has the result; Analysis, Patterns, and Stats have the Match Profile: how aggressive your player was, which wing held up and which gave points away, how points ended, and Clutch Delta, which shows how they played on break points and set points compared with the rest of the match. Under Insights you’ll find their ELO rating over time and their head-to-head record with this opponent.
How much you see depends on how much you tracked. Games gives you the result and the head-to-head; Points and up add momentum and pressure; Point Outcomes and Full shot tracking fill in the Match Profile.
Step 5: Record the big points on video
When you track with Points or a deeper style, Smashpoint prompts you at set points, match points, and break points to record the next point on video. Hold your phone up, record, then enter the outcome as usual. The clip is attached to that point.
Watch replays later on your iPhone, iPad, Android device, Apple TV, or in the browser with the web app. Replays never appear on the public match page; they’re visible only inside Smashpoint to you and the people you’re connected with.
Step 6: Connect with the coach, and keep your own notes
Connect with your player’s coach in Smashpoint and match results and data flow both ways: what you tracked reaches the coach automatically, and the coach’s point-by-point results reach you. The next practice gets built around what actually happened.
Add your own notes on your player right in Smashpoint: a stroke to work on, how they handled the pressure. Notes are private to you and are never shared with anyone, including the coach.
