Run a ladder (Leap Frog vs Accrual)

Ladders are an Organization feature. A Group gives you standings; a ladder adds challenge rules, points, and a leaderboard that updates with every reported match.

Steps

  1. Go to Ladders and click +. The wizard has three steps: Info, Rules, Players.
  2. Info: name the ladder, set Start and End dates, pick the Location, choose singles or Double, and set Gender (Male, Female, Mixed) and optionally a Playing Level. Leave Public on if you want the ladder to appear in Smashpoint search results; switch on Closed Ladder if members should not be able to request to join. Fee and Prize are for information only.
  3. Rules: choose the System (see below) and the Match Format: best of three or five with various tiebreak options, 8- or 10-game pro sets, single sets, a 10-point match tiebreak, or custom.
  4. Players: add the members who start on the ladder. New players start at the bottom.
  5. Save. The ladder is Active from its start date.

The two systems

Leap Frog is the classic challenge ladder. Any player may challenge any player. If the higher-ranked player wins, they add 20 points to their own total. If the lower-ranked player wins, their points are replaced by the opponent’s points plus 20, so they jump over them. The loser gets 1 point per game won.

Accrual rewards playing. Every winner adds 20 points to their existing total; every loser gets 1 point per game won. Nobody moves down for losing, so it suits ladders where you want as many matches played as possible.

In both systems the leaderboard updates after each match entry, points don’t expire, and the organizer can add or remove players at any time.

Good to know

  • Reporting results. Members record their ladder match like any Organization match and pick the ladder in the Ladder field on the New Match Info step. The leaderboard updates on save.
  • Joining. On a public ladder, members can submit a request to join unless the ladder is Closed. Guests can’t be on ladders.
  • Fees. Smashpoint does not collect fees on your behalf. Use your club’s existing payment system and just note the fee on the ladder.
  • Status. Ladders move through Draft, Active, and Archive; filter the Ladders page by status.
